Apple in the US has updated its online store today, adding a shipping date and pre-order buttons for the different versions of the iPad 3G. And it looks like Americans will be able to lay their hands on the the 3G variant of the device “by May 7th”. As with the Wi-Fi model, each customer is currently able to pre-order a maximum of just two iPads online.

J-1 Macro Lens Attachment for the iPhone by Eventual Future Studios

Follow @eventualfuture or @jamescampbell directly for the latest development information on this lens.

If you own an iPhone and enjoy photography and iphoneography, this prototype J-1 Macro lens may be something you will be interested in helping out with, so please read on. If this is not the case, thanks for visiting, but feel free to skip the heavy parts.

Introduction

Hello. As you may or may not know, I am James Anthony Campbell, owner of Eventual Future Studios. My friends call me Jim or Jimbo or Jimmy. I've been a photographer in the DC area for a few years now shooting mainly with my D90 and various lens. Then the iPhone 3GS came along and I became addicted to iphoneography (3gs photo a day project) and everything changed. As evidenced by the recent gallery showcasing iphoneography, of which I was lucky enough to be a part of, it appears that mobile photography is something that is taking off as an art form in its own right.

I hope these pictures get you excited, they got me excited. They are of my macbook pro keys. You can see the grains of aluminum! That's why I decided to go ahead and turn this little lens fabrication into a full fledged product. I am seeking talented folks who want to help with the design, production and marketing of the J-1. I am also just seeking some critique and honest advice from anyone willing to offer.

About the J-1 Macro lens

Ok, hopefully you made it this far. To put it simply, the J-1 is an accessory that can clip onto any iPhone that instantly amplifies the macro capabilities of the built-in camera. According to my preliminary trials, it allows you to get twice as close to the object before visible blurring occurs.

As you can see in the following pictures, the image captured is sharp.

The first image is with the regular lens, as close as I can get without blurring.

The second image is with the J-1 lens attachment, you can see vignetting, but I fixed that in the latest version of the lens. (Note: I took these with my iPhone 3GS, I can't speak for the quality from older iPhone versions).

The last picture shows an early prototype of the lens.

So now what?

What do you think? I am open to suggestions, complaints, whatever at this point in the design phase. I think this is something that a lot of iphone owners would love to have as long as it is small, portable, and easy to use. I am thinking the price will be under $20 USD based on how much it will be to mass produce the lens.

Don't forget to check out my other posterous sites (I have way too many) and my favorite project, "this place runs on..." http://thisplacerunson.com. Don't forget to subscribe to updates via RSS or email. Of course feel free to check out my flickr photos and add me as a contact. I always enjoy getting inspired by the great photographers that are out there.

Thanks!
